We were SURPRISED and touched by an amazing performance that was put together by the students at the last minute to show their appreciation for the work that we accomplished at the school, the bonds and friendships that were created throughout the week. During the celebration, students danced in traditional Mayan clothing and shared a piece of their prideful history with us as outsiders. The students performed many traditional dances as well as served a traditional hot corn drink and chicken tamales for us to enjoy during the traditional dances. We were all very touched to experience this celebration because it was totally unexpected. Afterward we were able to engage with students and take pictures upon many of their requests before sharing a final goodbye and heading to Lake Atitlan.
As educators who teach and mentor in the Boston Public School System, we wanted for provide a resource to teachers, administrators, students and families in our district that would service as a teaching tool and share our rich and invaluable experience in Guatemala. Our desire was to both connect and collaborate with an organization and a specific community to create an authentic bridge of learning and understanding of the indigenous Mayan people. In this blog, you will see our 10-day journey.
